Reflection | Three
Somewhere along the way within my years of teaching harp lessons and all sorts of classes, a theme has appeared between my students and me: listen, connect, reflect.
I believe as musicians we use our ears in so many extraordinary ways. We listen to our music. We listen to others’ music. We listen to our students’ music. We also listen to much more than sounds in the air—we listen to people’s hearts through their music. We listen to their emotions, their stories, and their essence.
As musicians we are fortunate to be able to connect with others through our art in such meaningful ways. We connect through an intangible phenomenon which becomes tangible for so many, and which truly does change lives when connection with our neighbor is often lost to technology as the interpreter.
We also reflect on what we do, and how we improve. Going home and reflecting on what we have learned throughout our days and what we have learned about each other begs us to create more beauty within our communities.
Let’s join each other every day in listening, connecting, and reflecting on the ways we can use our music and gifts to change the world. —February, 2025
