String Motif
I have truly enjoyed designing and making jewelry for the past several months! This process is not unlike learning or writing a piece of music. The challenges of creative problem-solving and creating a balanced, integral design are what I enjoy most. Last summer I needed to fix a bracelet by re-stringing the beads. I realized (rather, remembered during this process) just how much I enjoy working with my hands, and fell quickly and thoroughly involved with this craft. I also realized that I make jewelry much like how I envision writing a piece of music: I imagine the end product first, and then go through the steps of creating it. I’ve found a special tie within the visual “string motif” in my jewelry, and with making music on the harp strings, so I often use nylon harp strings in the design. Sometimes there are bumps and bobbles along the way, but I’ve found the lessons in this craft to be incredibly valuable in my music composing as well as harp practicing. What a delightfully fun and creative outlet!
