Introduction, Theme, & Variations
Introduction, Theme, & Variations is an advanced-level work for pedal harp solo. The serenity of the introduction foreshadows the free and introverted nature of the theme. I grew up listening to Gregorian chant, and although the theme is original, it shares some characteristics of chant, including modal tonality and freedom of pulse. As a child I fell asleep to the sound of our grandfather clock chiming, so I like to use low notes in my compositions to echo the sound of that clock. Three low notes introduce the theme. The first variation is a similar statement of the theme but with fuller harmonic support. Throughout the variations the theme and harmonic progression is basically preserved in both rhythm and pitch. Some of the variations were composed with a specific technique in mind, allowing the harp to sing in unique ways. I chose the keys, harmonies, and note durations that create beautiful colors and textures in my mind and which I find very sensual to play. I love listening to the decaying sound and vibrating harmonies within these variations.
